Our history

1963

The Circle Opens.

The Waikīkī Circle Hotel opens its doors, introducing one of the most distinctive buildings in Waikīkī. Designed by Park Associates, its round, mid-century structure quickly becomes an architectural landmark. The hotel was commissioned by local entrepreneur Emma Kwock Chun, whose vision brought modern design and family-run hospitality to the heart of Waikīkī.

1970s

A Growing Waikīkī.

As tourism flourishes across Hawai‘i, the Circle becomes a favorite for travelers seeking both convenience and character. Its beachfront location and boutique scale make it a memorable alternative to the larger resort towers rising around it.

1980s

A Local Legacy.

The hotel remains proudly family-owned, preserving its original charm even as Waikīkī continues to evolve. Generations of visitors return year after year, drawn by the Circle’s welcoming spirit and nostalgic mid-century appeal.

1990s

A Classic Reimagined.

Subtle updates keep the hotel comfortable while retaining its iconic circular form. During this time, the Waikīkī Circle Hotel becomes recognized as one of the few remaining examples of authentic mid-century modern architecture in the district.

2000s

Celebrating Heritage.

The hotel’s distinctive design and family story gain renewed appreciation. The Circle becomes a beloved photo spot and is often featured in travel publications highlighting Waikīkī’s architectural history.

2020s

A New Chapter.

More than six decades since its opening, the Waikīkī Circle Hotel continues to embody the aloha spirit that inspired its creation. In 2025, the hotel partners with Castle Resorts & Hotels, beginning a new era of management while maintaining its family legacy and timeless design.
